Black walnut has been prized among woodworkers in the United States for decades. Its rich dark color, strength and tight grain pattern puts the wood in a class of its own among American hardwoods. It polishes to an exceptionally smooth finish and beautiful figuring grain patters can be found. The color ranges from a creamy white in the sapwood to a dark chocolate in the heartwood with darker brown streaks. The color can also have a grey, red or purplish sheen.
